Background: The nonprofit leaders provide a valuable community service. It would be devastating to the sports clubs of interest if voluntary commitment waned. Therefore, it is especially important that leaders are motivated and get the chance to develop and continue to be committed.

Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate whether leaders in the nonprofit sports association Friskis&Svettis Karlstad experiencing a need for knowledge, concerning leadership and training. The aim also is to find out in which way the knowledge in training and leadership develops, and also examine the way in which the leader needs to be inspired and be able to transfer those feelings to the group.

Method: The survey is based on an idiographic approach with interviews. Six leaders of the association participated in the study. An interpretive phenomenological analysis was used to analyze the data.

Results: The result shows that the leaders feel secure being leaders, and they consider that their leadership develops through experiencing leadership. However, it appears that leadership is always in a progressive state of evolution. The result showed that leaders however experienced need to keep developing their training skills. Knowledge of training theory is the most desired. The result also shows that the leaders developed through good relationships with other leaders. The leaders wish to be inspired by the so-called “inspiration days”.
