Children and stress in schools : Teachers experience of stress in children at school (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract

Stress is a well discussed topic these days. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether children are stressed in school/at leisure, what factors that contribute to stress and what the school can do to prevent stress for children.

The results of the interviews showed that five of the six teachers who participated in the interview experience that children are stressed in school and/or at center. Factors that contribute to stress are long hours that lead to stress for the children. Likewise, the size of the group is a contributing factor. Large groups of children in relation to few staff results in that the children's needs and interests are not being met to the extent that would be needed. Two of the interviews also show results that parents can be a major stressor that manifest themselves in school. High demands and too many spare time activities lead to negative stress for the children. Stress is an outlet for the children that are restless and have difficulty concentrating. Sometimes it can be displayed by aggression.

The discussion around the interviews and the literature showed that the teachers' experience of stressed kids at school are consistent with the information from the research results. It is not uncommon that children are stressed in school. They are adversely affected by the large groups of children. The teachers are not able to give the time that each child needs. It is difficult to adapt activities to each child's interests.

The survey can be summarized by that the groups of children need to be reduced and resources should be placed in the correct place so that the school should be able to increase the ability to reduce stress in children in the school and at center, thereby increase the prospects for a stimulating education and meaningful recreation for the children
