: Students’  experiences and perceptions of physical education A survey of students who are active in sport clubs with those who are not (English)
Abstract [en]

Sporting activities during free time have decreased because of various factors. The physical education in schools has also been decreased. Therefore, it becomes now clearer differences between those who play sports regularly and those who do not. In previous research it has emerges very clearly that any kind of physical activity is good for the health. Therefore, those students who did not play sports in their free time in a danger zone where they do not get enough physical activity. Their approach to sport and health is most highly different to each other’s. This difference in students is relevant to the purpose of their experience and perception of physical education may remain for the rest of their lives. The survey was conducted through qualitative interviews. Four students who are active in sport clubs and four students who are not active in sport clubs were interviewed in this study. Their response has been transcribed and analyzed to obtain a fruitful outcome of the survey's purpose. The interviewed students in this study strongly identified themself with sports or were strictly against sports. All the students were well aware of who or what role they had during the physical education classes. They also saw clear patterns over the roles their classmates adopted during the lessons. The students had different backgrounds of physical education and health which clearly affects their current thinking on the subject. Their social background also has a significant role in how they see physical education and health. Although there were clear differences between the students regardless of whether they were active in sport clubs or not, they seem to think that physical education and health are strongly connected and that health is something very important. The students have strong opinions about physical activities and health. This is because they probably want to defend their own identity where they are either athletes or not athletes. Views on health, however, are very strong among all students. Health may in practice serve as a clear and significant motivating factor for students to be physically active.
