Younger pupils conception of history : A study among pupils in elementary school about the interest for- and the meaning of history (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how pupils in elementary school perceive the subject history, which includes pupils wiew of the subjects meaning, if history is perceived as interesting and which areas in history the pupils find interesting. In order to reach the purpose of the study a survey was made in two schools with a total amount of 110 participant pupils. The results of the study shows that the pupils mainly have a positive attitude towards history. A large amount of the pupils shows interest for the subject and an even larger amount pupils find knowledge in history important. When they are to describe why, or why not it is important to have knowledge in history, a big variety of answers is shown, many pupils states that it`s important because it`s a way of understanding our development, while others means that we`re not supposed to look back into the past, instead live in the moment. In the terms of which areas the pupils shows interest in, it was shown that history about war was popular among the boys, while the history of the pupils own family was most intersting among the girls.
