Forming democrats : Teachers' views on the democratic assignment of the upper secondary school (English)
Abstract [en]

This study does not discover anything new in democratic theory. This is a study focuses only on teachers everyday work and the problems which arise from a diffuse idea such as democracy. The study looks on the notion of democracy in the policy documents and compares this with the view on democracy which is present among the studied teachers. The main notions studied are views on democracy, democratic values and democratic ways to work. These notions are studied among five upper secondary school teachers and the study is based on what they say. These views are compared with the policy documents general theories on democracy. This study shows a lack in seeing democracy in a broader definition. It also shows that the teachers tend to see democracy as a system of governing and majority elections as a democratic method. Furthermore it shows dissatisfaction with the democratic system.

Abstract [sv]

Den här studien upptäcker inte någonting nytt hos demokratibegreppet. Detta är en studie som enbart fokuserar på lärarens vardag och den problematik som finns kring ett diffust begrepp som demokrati. Studien undersöker begreppet demokrati i styrdokumenten och komparerar detta med den syn som lärare har på demokrati. Det huvudbegrepp som undersöks är Demokratisyn, Demokratiska värden och Demokratiska arbetsformer. Dessa begrepp studeras hos fem gymnasielärare och hela studien baserar sig på vad de har att säga. Deras synpunkter kompareras med styrdokument och generella demokratiteorier. Denna studie visar på svårigheter att greppa en bredare definition av demokratibegreppet. Ytterligare visar den på att lärarna har en fallenhet för att se demokrati som ett valsystem och att majoritetsval är en demokratisk metod. Men den visar också på ett missnöje med det svenska demokratiska systemet.
