Real men and queer men: - constructing and consuming masculinity, heterosexuals and homosexuals in media shows
Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, Department of Education.
2006 (English)Conference paper, Published paper (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

Gender and sexual identities are today offered, sold and consumed as products (Faludi 1999; Halberstam 2005; Mort 1996; Nixon 1996; Osgerby 2002). Starting in Butlers concept of gender and sexuality as constituted by repeated and performative performances and Halberstams discussion of metronormativity this paper discusses the constructions of the heterosexual and the homosexual man in three TV-shows; A Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, The Styling Emergency Ward and Gay Army. In the programs the subject positions Homosexual man and Heterosexual man are essentialised and presented as opposites by being connected to different masculinity concepts. In the construction of the homosexual man is the position gay normalised as a white, young, able bodied, urban, feminised, unmanly and aesthetical skilled man. Some interesting ambivalences can be found. Masculinity, heterosexuality and homosexuality is both constructed and emphasized as a resource and problematised, made fun of and othered.
