Abstract [en]

Electronic business is to an increasing extent becoming a necessity in professional organisations. Indeed, the assumption made for the public sector is that electronic commerce will gradually be considered a condition for all trade. In regard to EDI, the most automated form of electronic business, driving forces such as operating profits, a sustained competitive advantage and strengthened business relationships are often emphasised. It is argued that combining a process theory perspective with a relationship perspective is fruitful to understand EDI. In this context there are several significant conditions that have a bearing on the processes of adoption and use. The chapter ends with five pieces of advice to top managers who are considering investing in and using EDI as a means to support their business operations
