Constructing masculinity in PE education
Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education, Department of Education.
2006 (English)Conference paper, Published paper (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

In my presentation I will discuss how physical education (PE) produces polarized and stereotypical gender categories but also a hierarchy of masculinity positions. By emphasizing the competitive and strenuous aspects of PE, the education functions as a coach of traditional and hegemonic masculinity. Besides emphasizing masculinity in certain ways this practice also marginalizes girls and some boys. My observations of teachers disciplining practices, in forms of criticism, hard physical exercises, yells, and allusions to fighting spirit, is in accordance with earlier research on boys, school and masculinity. However, in my presentation I will highlight how this practice also produces resistance and opens for alternative masculinity definitions and discourses. The study is informed by post structuralism and critical studies on men and masculinities and is carried out as a case study on two primary schools
