A dynamical systems appoach to relativistic stars and cosmology

Abstract [en]

This thesis investigate (i) cold relativistic stellar models, e.g. neutron star models, and (ii) anisotropic spatially homogenous cosmological models with closed topology, which are of relevance for the very early universe and our understanding of inhomogeneous cosmology on small spatial scales; both investigations take place within the framework of general relativity. In both cases we are interested in studying the relationship between matter and the space-time structure it generates. For this purpose we develop dynamical systems approaches that allow us to treat matter with quite general properties. We prove several theorems that qualitatively describe various features of space-time structure that do not depend on the detailed properties of matter. The analytical investigations are complemented by numerical ones, which yield a more detailed understanding
