Abstract [en]

This study is about young children playing in the physical indoor environment. Indoor environment in preschools are designed differently. There are kindergartens with larger and smaller spaces for children to play in. The purpose of this study was to investigate the importance of the environment for small children playing. Since it was the children's play that was interesting to study so I was elected observations as method. So my empirical data were collected on a toddler department. The processing of the empirical data so I came up with my results.

Educators have an important role for children in that it was the environment that adapts to the children's interests. It was important that the children themselves could take the toys and materials. However, my study shows that the children could play with what they wanted, and that many children could play together or separately in the same room. Educators need to be present in the children's play in order to help resolve any conflicts that arise. The conclusion I made was that children adapt to the different environment, the designs and the children affect with each other while they play.
