The young children can : Pedagogical looking after of toddlers competence. How preschool teachers in theory would look after young children`s competence (English)
Abstract [en]

The relationship between the pedagogue and the young child under three years old looks different in Swedish preschools. The purpose of this research was to get an insight into how active pedagogues in their theory want to work in a good way to look after the young children´s competence. To get a theoretical insight into how the pedagogues look after the competence of the young children, qualitative interviews were made in five preschools with different kinds of physical environments. These differences were important to obtain such a broad picture as possible of the problem. The interviews referred to research questions which aimed to find out what the pedagogues consider as being competence of a little child, if every competence will be encouraged, how they worked with these competences and if there are some opportunities and difficulties in this pedagogical work.

The results showed that there are many similar thoughts and theories of how to work to look after the competence in the best way. But there were also different answers in the view of how the pedagogues understand competence and what you have to encourage. Most of the results could be related to what earlier research projects have said about looking after  the competence of young children, but the interviewed pedagogues also talked about working with children in a way that no researcher has written about earlier.

The use of the results of this research can contribute to more equivalent preschool operations, because from this research project the pedagogues can take part of other pedagogues’ ideas about looking after the competences of children younger than three years old.
