The operating room nurses' perceptions of responsibility for hygiene in the operating room (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: To be responsible for hygiene in the operating room is one of the key features in operating room nurse profession. This is to prevent the patient suffering due to postoperative infections. The aim was to describe the operating room nurses’ perceptions of responsibility for hygiene in the operating room.

Method: A qualitative method with a descriptive design was chosen. Purposeful sampling was used to select the operating room nurses from two hospitals in Sweden. The data collection was carried out through interviews with six operating room nurses. The material was analyzed with a phenomenographic approach.

Results: Three categories of operating room nurses' perceptions of responsibility for hygiene in the operating room revealed. These were: "Through their professionalism the operating room nurse lead the team in the operating room with a focus on patient safety", "Despite the rigor and precision, the operating room nurse could be flexible and adaptable and function in both detailed work and in the whole work context” and "Through special observation the operating room nurse could observe what no one else could detect and through that preserve the sterile field”.

Conclusion: The result shows that operating room nurses perceptions of responsibility for hygiene in the operating room are complex and that multiple perceptions exist about the phenomenon. This is important to bear in mind when discussing competence development in operating room nurses responsibilities for hygiene.
