Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to investigate how a small group of elderly people in the third age might experience their own aging from three investigation questions: how they experienced their individual aging, what a good life means and how they considered growing old in today’s society. One underlying cause of the research was to see if these people saw themselves affected by attitudes in today’s society in relation to their age. For this study were selected active retirees, who were members of a pensioner’s organization. To get the questions answered we applied a qualitative method with a phenomenological attempt. Four separated interviews were used with two male and two female retirees in the ages from 70 to 79 years old. The interviews were partly centered on the three investigation questions and the interviews were constructed in the form of a conversation. The result showed us that especially the people that we investigated led a very mentally and physical active life, were healthy, had a rich social network, were engaged in societies and were well being. The way the retirees experienced their own age varied depending on their individual contexts and state of health. A good life for them consisted in maintaining healthy, having good friends and staying busy. To grow older in today’s society was experienced by them by time passing very quick, safety in the society and a decent living, but there occurred signs on phenomenon that could indicate discrimination due to age, which is ageism.
