Burning affects the number of species, species composition and proportion of grass in semi-natural meadow (English)
Abstract [sv]

Bränning har använts av människor för bearbetning av naturen av flera anledningar, t.ex. för att bryta ny mark eller för att skapa bättre bete för boskap. Om bränningen sker under tidig vår är det mindre risk att växtligheten skadas. Det som sker när den döda biomassan bränns är att det mesta av kvävet försvinner till atmosfären, vilket gynnar hög artdiversitet.

För att utreda huruvida artanatal, artsammansättning och procentandel gräs i frisk ängsmark, påverkas av bränning utsågs tre lokaler med olika bränningsfrekvens: gammalbränd (inte bränd i år, men tidigare), nybränd (bränd varje år) och obränd (aldrig bränd), vilka inventerades under sommaren 2007 varefter resultatet sammanställdes.

Det fanns flest arter i kategori gammalbränd, något färre i nybränd och minst antal arter i obränd. Det visade sig även att olika arter gynnades eller missgynnades i de olika kategorierna. För ett visst antal arter kunde ingen påverkan visas varpå dessa arter antogs vara opåverkade av bränning. Procentuellt gynnades flest arter i kategori gammalbränd vid jämförelse med kategori obränd. Artsammansättningen varierade mellan kategorierna. Det fanns större andel gräs i kategori obränd än i nybränd och gammalbränd.

Abstract [en]

Burning has been used for preparation of the landscape for diverse reasons, for example breaking new land or make better conditions for the pasture. If the burning takes place during the dormancy period there is less risk to harm the vegetation. When the necromass is burned most of the nitrogen is lost to the atmosphere, which favours high species diversity.

To investigate whether the number of species, species composition and the proportion of grass are affected by burning, three categories were chosen: old burned (not burned this year, but earlier years), new burned (burned every year) and unburned (never burned). An inventory of the field sites was performed during the summer of 2007.

It turned out that the old burned category had the greatest number of species, the newburned exhibited slightly fewer species, while the unburned category had the lowest number of them all. It also became clear that some species were favoured while others were at a disadvantage in the three different categories, and for some species no influence could be measured. Calculated in percentage, most species were favoured in old burned categories in comparison with the unburned ones. The species composition was different between the three categories. There was a greater proportion of grass in the unburned category than in the new burned and old burned ones.
