Fact, Fiction and Faction : A study about high school students fascination for "true literature" (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate why students are attracted to reading "true literature" and if the students believe that this type of literature is preferable. I also want to investigate if students are taught to read literature in a literary way, and if they learn how to critically analyze literature in school.

Key questions are as follows: What is "true literature" for high school pupils? Why do pupils choose this type of literature? Do pupils critically examine literature in school? The study was conducted by a review of previous research, a quantitative study in the form of questionaries, looking at school from a pupil’s perspective, a qualitative study in the form of interviews giving a teacher’s perspective. In addition I draw on my own experiences as a trainee teacher and my ideas for the teaching profession.

The results in a glance, shows that the students read any books that inspire a sense of "recognition" and “the reality". It turns out that they read these books because it interests them and they feel that they learn something. Teachers have somewhat different thoughts on why students choose precisely this literature. The study also suggests that pupils are not specifically given the task to read literature in a literary way, and that they do not critically examine it on a deeper level, or at worst, not analyze och discuss it at all.
