Abstract

There are many lessons to be learned from the recession in the 1990s. Long-term consequences of being out of employment displayed a gendered pattern. Those who had an unstable labour market attachment during the 1990s also had that in the early years of the 2000s. In this article we analyse the relations between labour market attachment, work and family conditions and health from a gender perspective. The class dimension has become increasingly important when it comes to explaining changes in labour market attachment for the single individual. This is a result that also holds for working conditions, family demands and health outcomes.

Our analyses are based on a large number of variables. Questionnaire data for 4 965 persons are related to registered income over the years 1990 to1999 by logistic regression analyses. The study has identified several areas at work and outside work that indicate multidimensional subordination.
