Thinking Bigger: Fusion Concepts, Strengths and Scenarios
Karlstad University, Faculty of Social and Life Sciences, Department of Politics and History.
2011 (English)In: Europe Reloaded: Differentiation or Fusion? / [ed] U. Diedrichs, A. Faber, F. Tekin and G. Umbach, Baden-Baden: Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft , 2011, 187-210 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
Abstract

This chapter, in a prestigious volume published jointly under the auspices of German academic publisher, Nomos, and the Institut fur Europaische Politik, Berlin, that commemorates the work of Professor Wolfgang Wessels, architect of the 'fusion thesis', argues that there is a pressing need for EU scholars to 'think bigger' when seeking to build theories explaining the process of European integration. In particular, the chapter suggests that fusion approaches offer numerous advantages for scholars of European integration. In addition, the chapter outlines the five 'S's' that embody the conceptual strengths of European integration and thus provides notable academic added value to the existing work of fusion approaches for European Union studies
