Academic Institutions´ Adaptability
Karlstad University, Faculty of Arts and Education.
2002 (English)Other (Other academic)
Abstract [en]

Academic institutions are expected to adapt to a turbulent and changing environment. However, academic institutions adaptability is dependent on a number of aspects, external as well as internal. In this article, some of these aspects are viewed by the use of van Vught´s (1995) concepts of extrinsic- and intrinsic qualities in order to find out some of the pre-requisites of academic institutions adaptability. Common as welll as more unique adaptation strategies in academic institutions are discussed. Particular interest is put in the perspective on academic institutions as learning organisations, as one possible unique adaptation strategy. No such empirical study has yet been conducted in the research field of higher education. In this article, such study is proposed by a brief examination of the theoretical framework of learning organisations, which might be possible to use in an operational analysis in a forthcoming study.
