Att undervisa om viktenheter: En variationsteoretisk studie i matematik

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to find a good way to teach units of weight and unit measurement conversion. I wanted to see if there is a way to plan a lesson which would both increase the students possibilities of learning and improve student results based on an analysis of the previous lesson. Furthermore, I wanted to see what it was that made one lesson more effective than another. Effective, in the meaning of successful for students learning. Together with fellow teachers and two groups of 5th grade students, I carried out a Learning study, which worked both as a research method as well as a model for in-service training. A Learning study is a cyclic process in which the lessons are planned, carried out, analyzed and audited. The cycle is normally repeted two to four times. In my study, two cycles were carried out. The lessons were filmed and then analyzed to see how the object of learning was treated during the lessons. Variation theory has been used as a basis of the planning, analysis and the altering of the teaching. The results of the study show that the level of knowledge of the students increased after the second lesson in comparison to the first lesson. We found several critical features which were necessary for the students to discern. Critical features mean distinguishing features. One such feature was to give the students an understanding of how much one gram weighs in comparison to one kilogram and one hectogram. Another was to define the prefixes (kilo-, hecto- etc) as well as the relationship between the different units of measurement. By using different patterns of variation for teaching during the lesson, the learning ability of the students increased. The study shows that effectively focusing of the object of learning, what the students should learn, was a successful way to increase the learning possibility.

Syftet med min undersökning var att försöka ta reda på hur undervisningen om viktenheter och enhetsomvandlingar kan utvecklas med hjälp av variationsteorin. Jag ville ta reda på hur man utifrån en lektion kan analysera och planera en ny lektion som skulle öka elevernas möjligheter till lärande och förbättra deras resultat. Jag ville försöka få svar på vad i undervisningen som gjorde den ena lektionen mer effektiv än den andra med fokus på hur läraren behandlade lärandeobjektet. Tillsammans med lärare och två grupper elever i år 5 genomförde jag en Learning study, vilket fungerar både som en forskningsmetod och en modell för fortbildning. En Learning study är en cyklisk process där undervisningen planeras, genomförs, analyseras och revideras. Denna cykel upprepas vanligtvis 2-4 gånger. I denna undersökning genomfördes två cykler. Lektionerna videofilmades och analyserades med fokus på hur lärandeobjektet behandlades i undervisningen. Det variationsteoretiska perspektivet har legat till grund för planering, analys och förändringar av undervisningen. Resultatet visar att elevernas resultat ökade efter den andra lektionen jämfört med den första. Vi fann flera kritiska aspekter som eleverna måste urskilja. Med kritiska aspekter menas kännetecknande drag hos ett lärandeobjekt. Bland annat behövde eleverna utveckla en förståelse för hur mycket ett gram, ett hektogram respektive ett kilogram väger, få kunskap om prefixens betydelse samt förstå viktenheternas inbördes relation. Genom att använda olika variationsmönster i undervisningen ökade elevernas möjligheter till lärande. Det visade sig vara framgångsrikt att fokusera på innehållet i undervisningen, vad eleverna ska lära sig, för att öka elevernas möjligheter till lärande.
