Abstract [en]

AbstractDuring the latest years Sweden and large parts of Europe have shown signs of a political shift, the right extremist parties are starting to gain more and more mandates in their respective region. The problem with criticism towards immigration among the population of Europe is that it could in the future inhibit the long-term economical growth. Why have this shift among the population happened? Why have the migration policy started to play such a large role the latest elections to parliament? This essay is based on secondary information in a quantitative study where the goal is to examine which underlying variables affect this political trend. The geographical limitation of the essay is the Swedish border within which we will observe all municipalities regarding mean income, unemployment, share of immigrants, number of reported crime and level of education. We believe that it is these five variables that affect a voter to vote for a party with radical views of immigration. In Sweden the largest party representing these views is Sverigedemokraterna (”The Swedish Democrats”), thus it is this party that we denote as criticism towards immigration among the population. 1The results of this essay are: Mean income and level of education among the population affects the votes for Sverigedemokraterna independently in every election. Mean income have a negative effect while education level has a positive effect. Crime rate is a very central variable for the election results in favor for Sverigedemokraterna. A larger share of immigrants does not increase the share of votes for Sverigedemokraterna directly but indirectly through all the underlying variables affected by immigration. Sverigedemokraterna should have a policy in favor for immigration, which is on the contrary to their present agenda.
