Sankt Judas ursprung: En studie av hopplöshetens helgon
2011 (Swedish)Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
The origin of Saint Jude : A study of the saint of despair (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study is about the origins of the Catholic saint, Saint Jude. In Catholic tradition, Saint Jude is the saint of the hopeless and this study investigates the saints’ identity in ancient text sources. The aim was to explore a topic which has not yet been investigated. The ancient text sources used were the biblical books and Church History (or Historia Ecclesiastica) by Eusebius of Caesarea because most other sources weren’t sufficiently reliable and credible. The thesis first presents how the saint is depicted. Then the different personalities behind the saint and the different text sources are analyzed separately. From how the saint is depicted today it is evident that the saints’ identity is a harmonization of three different people in the ancient text sources and that the saints’ role has emerged in latter Christian tradition.
