The Hotel industry and the Environment : A case study about corporate customers selection of First Hotel Billingehus as their conference venue (English)
Abstract [en]

Today’s society are demanding more environmental friendly products then before

because the awareness of environmental issues has increased, so as well in the

tourism industry. The consumers are also frequently demanding more then an

affordable product, as they also value moral and ethical principles. Within the

Swedish hotel and conference sector, several companies have chosen to work with

environmental issues. These businesses make in proportion to their size, a significant

environmental impact.

This composition is a case study on the environmental work being conducted at First

Hotel Billingehus, who in 2009 became eco-labeled through The Nordic Swan label.

The purpose of this study was to examine the hotel's motives to pursue environmental

work, and also to explore corporate customers awareness about the environmental

work and its value when choosing a conference venue. This was completed by an

interview conducted with a representative from the hotel, and a questionnaire sent out

to the corporate customers. The theoretical framework is based on the ideas of

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which highlights the role of corporate

citizenship to create sustainable development. The reason why companies choose to

pursue environmental work will also be reviewed. The green paradigm is also an

important component of this study, which concludes that the tourism industry is

transforming to a sustainable industry.

This study concludes that only minorities of the corporate customers are in great

demand of environmental performance on their conferences. Other values in the

selection of choosing a conference location were more important. The hotel

environmental work can rather be seen as a complement to the more important factors

of choosing a conference venue. Flaws were also seen in the environmental

communication to there corporate customers. The hotel also felt the importance of

environmental work on their agenda, especially in the long term as environmental

issues are getting more and more integrated into society.
