Abstract [en]

Abstract

Preschool class activities should integrate play and learning. The aim of the introduction of the preschool class was not that it would be a first school year for six – year old children, but that it would be an activity that prepares the children for starting school. My purpose with this study was to investigate the relationship between play and learning in preeschool.

This is a qualitative case study based on an interview with a teacher working in a preschool class and a group interview with five children in preschool. In addition to my interviews I have taken note of previous research in the field I have chosen to investigate.

Results shows that play is an important part of preschool class activities and that learning activities are shaped in a play oriented way. Play and learning becomes a single concept when the children talk about what they learn in preschool. The teaching practice in the preschool class is based on conceptions of play as a basis for learning, and the teacher works to prepare the children for school giving them a “taste” of what is to come. In situations that require concentration and focus is the teacher's attention is directed towards how much the children can handle, if she notices that the children lose their concentration she gives them a break for play or others activities, which proves that play and physical activities are not something only taking place during the breaks.
