Yoga in School : A Phenomenological Study (English)
Abstract [en]

The subjects for this essay, which is being written within the teacher education, is yoga in school. The study is examining the following subject of discussion: “How can yoga be used in school, according to the informants of the study, and how is that applicable to the commission of school?”. It is being conducted within a phenomenological approach. Five semi-structured interviews with pedagogues who teach or have been teaching yoga in schools have been performed. The interviews have been transcribed and analysed with the EPP-method (the Empirical Phenomenological Psychological Method) as presented by Gunnar Karlsson (Karlsson, 1993). The analysis has lead to 27 categories which in various ways describe the phenomenon of yoga in school. These categories have been divided into five various themes: background of the informants, conduct of the yoga teaching, opinions of yoga, need of yoga and yoga in relation to the commission of school. From this it can be concluded that it's very possible to use yoga in school in various ways. Yoga is appreciated by all participants and gives good effects. The study shows some various ways of carrying through the yoga teaching in schools and shows that yoga can be used as a tool in increasing the learning of the pupils, their well-being and their dealing with the conditions of the present society. All of this fits well with the commission of school. The findings are related to the school's curriculum as well as to psychological, pedagogical, sociological and intercultural theories concerning the situation of youths in the contemporary society. Hopefully the study can encourage pedagouges to iplementing or developing yoga in school and inspiry to coming studies of the subject.

Ämnet för detta examensarbete inom lärarutbildningen är yoga i skolan. Studien undersöker frågeställningen “Hur kan yoga enligt studiens informanter användas i skolan och hur går det ihop med skolans uppdrag?”och utgår från ett fenomenologiskt perspektiv. Fem semi-strukturerade intervjuer med pedagoger som undervisar eller har undervisat i yoga ute på skolor har genomförts. Intervjuerna har transkriberats och analyserats utifrån EPP-metoden (the Empirical Phenomenological Psychological Method), enligt Gunnar Karlssons modell (Karlsson, 1993). Analysen har utmynnat i 27 kategorier vilka på olika sätt beskriver fenomenet yoga i skolan. Dessa kategorier har gett upphov till fem olika teman: informanternas bakgrund, upplägg av yogaundervisningen, andras åsikter om yoga, effekter och behov av yoga samt yoga och värdegrunden. Utifrån dessa kan man dra slutsatsen att det är fullt möjligt att på olika sätt använda sig av yoga i skolan. Det är dessutom uppskattat av alla inblandade och ger goda effekter. Studien visar på ett antal möjliga upplägg och pekar på att yoga kan användas som ett verktyg för att öka elevernas inlärning, välmående och levnadsvillkor i det samtida samhället. Allt detta är i linje med skolans uppdrag. Förutom till läroplanen relateras rönen även till psykologiska, pedagogiska, sociologiska och interkulturella teorier gällande ungdomarnas situation i dagens samhälle. Förhoppningsvis kan studien uppmuntra pedagoger till att införa eller utveckla yoga i skolans värld samt inspirera till vidare studier av ämnet.
