The essay examines how the EU is presented in textbooks for the courses Social Studies 1a1 and 1b, with a focus on how the content contributes to citizenship education based on polity, policy and politics according to Peter Wall's concepts, as well as Niklas Ammert's model for depth of explanation. The result shows that the politics dimension, which deals with the EU's framework and structure, dominates all textbooks, while the politics dimension, which concerns power structures and political actors, is weakly represented. The analysis indicates that the textbooks are mainly established and simplistic but lack reflective and analytical parts, which limits the students' understanding of the EU as a political system. The essay highlights the need to develop the textbooks to give a more three-dimensional picture of the EU and thereby better equip students for democratic participation.
