The study aims to highlight how preschool teachers perceive the concept of teaching. The background to the study is the report from Skolinspektionen (2018) which shows that preschool teachers do not see themselves as teachers and have difficulty distinguishing between teaching and learning. To achieve this, a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods has been used in the form of a semi-structured web survey. The result has been analyzed by using the socio-cultural theory as a framework.
The result highlights three different perceptions of teaching among the preschool teachers, these are that teaching is a goal-oriented process, that teaching happens when learning happens, and that teaching doesn’t belong in preschool. The study also shows that the majority of pre-school teachers distinguish between the concepts, but that there still are some difficulties in separating teaching from learning. And that they in large value their own role in teaching
A conclusion drawn from the study is that teaching has been implemented more since the report from Skolinspektionen where published. Although there still are some uncertainties about the concept's relevance and meaning in preschool.
