Student at a distance : A Qualitative Study on Social Factors Contributing to School Refusal. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examined the social factors that contributed to tendencies of school refusal among adolescents. The focus was on relationships, collaboration, and school resources. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews with school staff and family counselors who worked with students exhibiting school refusal behaviors. The analysis was grounded in the ecological perspective and systems theory, considering various levels (micro, meso, and macro) to understand the factors that influenced school absenteeism among youth. The results indicated that secure relationships were crucial in countering school refusal. Furthermore, the study highlighted the importance of collaboration between the home, school, and external actors such as social services in providing the necessary support for these adolescents. However, the findings revealed that inadequate resources within schools, both in terms of personnel and time, posed significant obstacles to meeting the needs of this target group. The conclusion emphasized that stronger collaboration among schools, families, and social services, as well as increased resources, were essential for preventing and addressing school refusal.
