Abstract [ca]

Aquest article ofereix una visió general de l'estat històric i actual de la cultura sefardita i, sobretot, de la llengua judeoespanyola a la ciutat de Tessalònica. L'article es basa en una entrevista amb Jack Benmayor, professor de judeoespanyol a la Universitat Aristòtil. La comunitat sefardita de Tessalònica es presenta com un grup que participa activament en esforços de manteniment i enfortiment de la cultura sefardita local. Pel que fa a la revitalització de la llengua judeoespanyola, es presenten les activitats actuals d'ensenyament i es discuteixen alguns desafiaments per a la presència contínua de la llengua a la ciutat de Tessalònica.

Abstract [en]

The present article gives an overview of the historical and current state of Sephardic culture in general, and of the Judeo-Spanish language in the city of Thessaloniki. The article is based on an interview with Jack Benmayor, a professor of Judeo-Spanish at Aristotle University. The Sephardic community of Thessaloniki is presented as a group actively participating in effortsto maintain and strengthen the local Sephardic culture. Regarding the revitalization of the Judeo-Spanish language, current teaching activities are presented, and challenges for the continued presence of the language in the city of Thessaloniki are discussed.
