The Thing about disgust : A history of ideas examination of the digusting and the sublima in John Carpenters The Thing (English)
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this essay is to analyse the movie John Carpenter´s The Thing using Patrik Lindenfors book Äckel: Smitta, synd, samhälle as a unified theory of disgust. And also to explore the movies themes of the sublime using the two essays Över avgrundenby Björn Billing and Den ojämna kampen by Kristian Petrov. Finding further support for these themes in horror and cosmic horror as genres in Thomas Ligottis The conspiracy against the human race. Using a culturehistoric method and a thick description as described by Clifford Geertz to describe the movie and the context of its release. The result of which is a thorough examination of both individual scenes and overall themes of the ways the movie disgust us and how the sublime presents itself. With a broad definition of disgust ranging from a moral disgust to a biological response, all present in Lindenfors book. And using the essays to establish the sublime as according to Kant and how it fits within the confines of the movie.
