Det finns forskning som indikerar att arbete med samhällsfrågor med naturvetenskapligt innehåll ökar elevernas engagemang och förbereder dem inför framtida ställningstagande. Forskningsresultat tyder också på att läroboken kan användas som underlag till vad som inkluderas i undervisningen och vilka elevaktiviteter som genomförs. 

Denna studie kartlägger hur två olika områden inom SNI presenteras i fem läroböcker inom gymnasiekursen naturkunskap 1b; klimatfrågan och genteknik. En kvalitativ tematisk innehållsanalys har genomförts. Utifrån studiens tidsomfång har innehållet i läroböckerna begränsats till de delar av läroböckerna som direkt beskriver de två områden som studien behandlar. 

Resultatet av studien tyder på att det finns ett visst inslag av SNI-aspekter, bland annat då det är autentiska teman som kopplas ihop med hur de kan påverka samhällen. Läroböckerna inkluderar aspekter som kännetecknar SNI men det finns indikationer på att vissa områden behöver utvecklas för att uppfylla ett SNI-upplägg, till exempel de ämnesövergripande perspektiven samt de intressekonflikter som belyses i innehållet. Det finns också tendenser att fokus ligger i de naturvetenskapliga beskrivningarna, vilket inte är ett överraskande resultat då läroböckerna inte är framtagna för att specifikt följa ett SNI-upplägg utan till att beskriva innehållet i kursen naturkunskap 1b. Resultatet tyder dock på att läroböckerna kan nyttjas som källa för insamling av, främst, vetenskapliga fakta och kan erbjuda eleverna olika ingångsvinklar på komplexa aspekter att vidareutveckla. 

There is research indicating that working with Socio Scientific Issues increase students’ engagement and prepares them for future decisions. Research results also suggest that the textbook can be used as a basis for what is included in education and some of the student activities that are carried out. 

This study maps how two different areas within SSI are presented in five textbooks in the subject of natural science 1b; the climate issue and genetic engineering. A qualitative thematic content analysis has been conducted. Based on the studies timeframe, the content of the textbooks has been limited to the parts that directly describe the two areas addressed in the study. 

The result of the study suggests that there is some incorporation of SSI aspects as these are authentic themes that are connected to how they can impact societies. The textbooks include aspects that characterises SSI, but there are indications that certain areas need to be developed to fulfil an SSI approach, such as the interdisciplinary perspectives and the conflicting interest highlighted in the content. There are also tendencies for the focus to be on the scientific descriptions, which is not a surprising result as the textbooks are not developed specifically to follow an SSI approach but to describe the content of the natural science 1b course. However, the result suggest that the textbooks can be utilized as a source for gathering, primarily, scientific facts and can offer students various perspectives to further develop complex aspects.
