The Foundations of Change : A Study of Biskopsgården's Development 1948-1956 in the Era of the Welfare State Ideal (English)
Abstract [en]
This essay explores the infrastructure initiatives in Biskopsgården, Gothenburg, during the post-war period, focusing on how these measures related to the political consensus and the ideals underpinning the Swedish welfare state, known as “Folkhemmet”. Utilizing qualitative content analysis of protocols, motions and press materials, the study illuminates the complex relationships between infrastructure projects and the political and social dimensions of urban development. The findings reveal that the executed infrastructure projects were not merely technical feats but also expressions of political ambitions and social aspirations, highlighting an ambition to create an inclusive, fair, and sustainable urban environment. The results indicate a deep rooting of these projects in the broader political consensus and ideals of the welfare state during the period, where they highlighted social change and welfare. This research contributes new insights into the understanding of post-war urban planning and underscores the importance of viewing infrastructure as a tool for achieving social goals. The study also highlights the need for further research on the social consequences of infrastructure projects, especially in terms of their impact on social integration and segregation.
