When Women Choose Evil : A Qualitative Study of Female Characters and Their Relationship to Semiotic Signs in Horrorfilm (English)
Abstract [en]

This essay examines how the perception of the main female character's identity in relation to the concept of evil in horror movies, using the independent horrorfilms The Blackcoat's Daughter, The Witch, and Midsommar, produced by A24. The study employs a qualitative, semiotic analysis with a feminist theological perspective to examine this relationship between character and semiotic sign. The methodology facilitates a critical examination of how gender, power, and religious themes intertwine in horror films, providing an opportunity to explore and critique women's portrayals in cinema. The concept of evil complements the examination of the portrayal of female characters and their choices of "evil", along with how evil and its manifestations can be understood and interpreted within the horror film genre. The analysis explores the dimensions of the female characters, challenging prevailing stereotypes and offering new insights into the representation of women in the horror genre. The religious dimensions in the study contribute to the understanding of the phenomenon of religion, by exploring the representation of female characters and the concept of evil in horror films. The analysis reveals a narrative reversal in the films regarding how the concept of evil and community are perceived through the female protagonist. The portrayal of evil as a liberation for the female protagonist, serves as sign of why women choose evil.
