Fine line between equal treatment andindividualization : A qualitative study regarding how the gender of individuals withaddiction can affect social workers treatment and judgment regardingtreatment (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers perceived the treatment andformation of addictioncare changed based on the clients’ gender. To answer the purpose thestudy used a qualitative method in the form of interviews with ten participants. The collecteddata was analyzed through a qualitative analysis and the theoretical concepts “Doing gender”,social constructivism and genusbias. The result of the study showed that social workers founddifferences in treatment and formation of addictioncare based on the clients’s gender and sex.The participants found that women and men could be perceived differently based on normativeand stereotypical preconceptions, linked to the gender of the individual, which led to differenttreatments and assumptions of needs. This furthermore contributed to the challenge that socialworkers found, to treat clients’ equal and individualized. The conclusion of the study was thatthere is a need to look over research and information regarding how the gender of clients’within addictioncare affects the treatment and care they get access to.
