Development of a lighting fixture in public corridors (English)
Abstract [en]

The product development of a lighting fixture is a bachelors thesis in the program in innovation technology and design at Karlstads university carried out by Heidi Hauguth, where the work corresponds to 22.5 credits and is carried out during the spring of 2023. The supervisor from Karlstad University is Monica Jakobsson and the examiner is Leo de Vin.

The client for the project is Nokalux in Töcksfors. Nokalux manufactures and produces lighting fixtures for the Nordic market and needs help developing its product catalogue. In August 2023, a large number of fluorescent tubes will be banned as they contain mercury. As a result, there will be a shortage of the type of light fixtures that are used in corridors, among other things.

The project was divided into 6 phases, project planning, feasibility study, requirement specification, concept generation, concept selection and construction. The preliminary study was an important and large part of the project as there was a lot of knowledge and information that project participants did not possess and that it was in this phase that very fundamental data was identified. Light and lighting fixtures were mainly investigated through literature studies. The lighting fixture must be used in public corridors, thus a compilation of current requirements and rules regarding the design of lighting fixtures and corridors was made. The requirements that existed were not specific, therefore an investigation was made into how different light conditions affect people and in which situations they are used.

The concept generation was based on smaller idea generation sessions where the methods used were brainstorming, braindrawing 6-3-5, braindrawing and brainwriting. The proposed solutions mainly revolved around the design of the fixture, the fixture's attachment method and its material.

The requirement specification was necessary for the project's results not only as it functioned as an agreement between project participants and company, but it was also an important part of the concept generation. This as many solution proposals from the idea generation were eliminated based on the requirements specification before the concept generation could be carried out.

The concepts went through Pugh's relative decision matrix and were presented to Nokalux, but the final concept was not the one with the highest score. The end result is presented both as a 3D model in a CAD program but also as a functioning, smaller prototype.

The final concept preserves the design language of Nokalux but excels in the choice of material, plywood, which is unusual in the lighting industry but more environmentally friendly than the materials that are common today.
