The purpose of the study is to examine the social position of women in the two artworksNattcafé I and Nattcafè II by Swedish artist Axel Törneman. These positions are thencompared between the works to demonstrate whether they confirm or contradict genderconventions in art of the time around the 19 th –20th century. The chosen method for the studyis a semiotic image analysis of the material consisting of the works Nattcafé I and Nattcafé II.The result is then discussed in the light of the gender studies framework via, among others,Griselda Pollock, and Lena Johannesson, as well as power structured gaze theory via LauraMulvey and Mary Ann Doane.
