Finns det en korrelation mellan talängslan i främmande språk och muntlig färdighet? : Svenska skolelevers inlärning av engelska som främmande språk (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

This essay investigates whether it is possible to distinguish a correlation between foreign language anxiety (FLA), measured oral proficiency, and students' self-reported proficiency. Participants were 40 students from two different English course levels at a lower and an upper secondary level in Sweden. Data was collected through a survey, where participants were asked to fill out their demographic information, estimate their measured oral proficiency and a possible FLA in English (using the Short-Form Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, S-FLCAS). To evaluate the participants' oral proficiency, audio and video recording of oral presentations were collected. The transcriptions were used to measure their lexical richness and syntactic complexity. The results showed that no correlation could be detected between participants' FLA levels and their self-reported proficiency for borht English course levels. Lower secondary school (LSS) participants perceived their proficiency as higher than upper secondary (USS) participants. They also experienced slightly higher levels of FLA compared to USS participants.
