The work and well-being of dental hygienists during Covid-19 : A qualitative study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction/Background: Covid-19 is a new phenomenon in society and has led to new experiences in healthcare related professions. By taking part in the dental hygienists' experiences of working during the pandemic, increased knowledge of Covid-19 in dentistry is obtained. This leads to an improved understanding in future pandemics.

Method: The study was a qualitative method with an inductive approach. A total of six semistructured interview studies were conducted with dental hygienists in public and private dental care in the Värmland region. The interviews were analyzed based on a theoretical framework that includes Sense Of Coherence (SOC).

Results: Through content analysis, the results of this interview study could be divided into two categories. The categories describe the experiences of dental hygienists regarding the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on their professional practice and well-being.

Conclusion: The conclusion based on the dental hygienists' experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic has shown that the period has been challenging and despite the psychological strain, the dental hygienists have a relatively high sense of coherence. This emphasizes that comprehensibility and manageability have been important factors for dental hygienists to be able to maintain good quality care. It may also be valuable to implement measures in the work environment that promote dental hygienists' well-being and development during challenging periods with similarities to the Covid-19 pandemic.
