Barn som upplever våld mellan sina föräldrar är per definition utsatta för psykiskt våld. Det är socialnämndens uppdrag att utreda barnets situation där en del i utredningen är att se hur barnets föräldrar kan tillgodose barnets behov i den situation som föreligger, samt att erbjuda stöd. Tidigare kunskap visar att det är skadligt för barn att uppleva våld, att det kan ge allvarliga konsekvenser för barnet och att det utifrån detta finns krav på vad som behöver utredas. BBIC (arbetssätt för socialtjänstens barn- och ungdomsvård) är ett sätt att strukturera information i insamlingsfasen, få beprövade metoder för utredning av våldet används vilket ger olika kvalité på utredningarna samt en rättsosäker hantering av uppgiften. Syftet med studien var att studera socialsekreterares erfarenheter av att bedöma omsorgsförmåga hos personer som använder våld mot barnets andra förälder. I den här uppsatsen deltog sex socialsekreterare som arbetar med barnavårdsutredningar i en kvalitativ intervju som genomfördes med hjälp av semistrukturerad intervjuguide, och en explorativ ansats till grund för process och innehållsanalys. Deltagarnas erfarenhet var att utredningen behöver omfatta en kartläggning av förälderns känslomässiga förmåga, hur våldet tar sett ut och vilka konsekvenser det medfört. Erfarenheten var även att utredningen påverkas av interna, externa och interpersonella faktorer och de beskrev avsaknaden av kunskap och systematiska verktyg för utredningen, och att det kunde försvåra för utredningen. Det fanns tillgängliga redskap för att utreda omsorgsförmåga hos våldsutövare men dessa användes inte. Antagandet var att det inte berodde på en ovilja utan på att uppdraget är komplext och att organisationen inte erbjöd ett gemensamt redskap utan förlitade sig på enskilda socialsekreterares kunskap. 

Children who experience violence between their parents are by definition exposed to psychological violence. It is in the social services committee's task to assess the situation of the child, including to which extend the child's parents can meet the child's needs in the current situation. Based on knowledge of the damage of violence to children, there are requirements for what is to be assessed. BBIC (working method for social services’ child and youth care) is a way of structuring information in the collection phase, but few proven methods for assessing violence is used, which gives different quality to the end result, as well as a legally uncertain handling of the task. The purpose of this essay was to study case workers' experiences of assessing the caring ability of people who use violence against the child's other parent. In this essay, six case workers who perform child protection investigations was participating in a qualitative interview that was conducted with the help of a semi-structured interview guide. An exploratory approach was the basis for the process and for the content analysis. The participants' experience was that the investigation needed to include a mapping of the parent's emotional ability, what the violence looks like and what consequences it has caused. The investigation was affected by internal, external, and interpersonal factors and participants described the lack of knowledge and systematic tools for the task. There were tools available to assess the violence, but these were not used. The assumption was not due to reluctance, but to the fact that the assignment is complex, and that the organization did not offer a common tool but relied on the knowledge of individual case worker.
