Working with adolescents who have problematic drug use : A qualitative study based on interviews with social workers (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the essay was to investigate how social workers work with adolescents who have problematic drug use. In the essay, a qualitative method has been applied where the empirical evidence was obtained through five semi-structured interviews with social secretaries in child welfare care and social workers who work at residential care homes for adolescents. The collected data was analyzed through a qualitative content analysis. Furthermore, the concepts profession, human-treating professions and social workers discretion were used as theoretical conceptions to analyze the result. The result showed that social workers used several and varied working methods. One conclusion was that there were similar working methods in all operations, but the execution partly differed. Some common working methods were, among other things, investigating underlying causes, relationship building, motivational conversations and cooperation with other authorities. Resources and preventive work were something that differed depending on the activity where the respondents had different perceptions about the lack of resources and how preventive work is applied in practice. The result showed furthermore that there were various success factors and complicating factors in the work where a conclusion that emerged was that various factors could be both promoting and aggravating. The adolescents' family was a factor that could have both a positive and negative impact on the work to counteract adolescents' drug problems. Furthermore, cooperation was of great importance in the work, but experiences around cooperation varied.
