Who pursues the rabbit? : A design study where the children experiment with the physical phenomenon of light and shadow (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract

The study is based on teaching design grounded in variation theory, and aims to develop knowledge about how teaching about physical phenomenon of light and shadow can be designed in an exploratory way to develop childrens`s science learning. A total of six children aged four to five were inkluded in the study. Through book talks and experiments, the children examined and reasoned about the phenomenon of light and shadow. The variation theory teaching approach was carried out and videotaped in two rounds in practice.

The film material was then studied based on a variation-theoretic analytic model, where attention was paid to how the teaching design gave pre-school children opportunities for interaction in order to develop an understandning of different aspects and features of shadows.

The result of the study show that through an active learning method, the children were able to discern the critical aspects of the learning object, which contributed to them gaining a better, more comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of light and shadow.

Abstract [sv]
