Our vital mission : A thesis on social workers' work with suicidal youth (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to look into the work methods used by social workers in Sweden for the treatment and support of suicidal youth, as well as what they believe to be underlying factors for a young person to consider ending their own life. In order to achieve the study’s purpose, qualitative method in the form of interviews with four social workers who come into contact with youth who experience suicidal-related problems were made. The study was permeated by the following theories: SOC (Sense of Coherence) as well as Crisis Intervention Theory. The results of the study showed that most of the time, there are several different factors that makes a young person want to take their own life. According to the respondents, there is a variety of different methods for working with children and young people at risk for suicide and that the most effective method cannot be determined, as it is highly individual. Furthermore, the results showed that all surveyed social workers use an encouraging and affirming approach, as well as low arousal approach. The respondents considered this to be very important and decisive in working with the target group. Based on this, the conclusion could be drawn that the very basis for successful results is to create a healthy relationship between professional and layperson.
