The rules of masculinity norms : A study of young men’s experiences of masculinity norms (English)
Abstract [en]

In today's society, there are different societal norms for both men and women that are expected to be pursued by the different sexes. These norms are expressed in different ways in the different gender spheres. There are norms that women should strive for in order to be identified as women in society. At the same time, there are norms that men should strive for in order to be identified as men in society. The purpose of the study is to gain an insight into how young men experience masculinity norms, which masculinity norms occur among young men and in which situations the masculinity norms are expressed in the young men's everyday lives. The study is also about finding out what happens if the young men break masculinity norms. The study is based on a qualitative approach consisting of interviews and a social constructivist perspective.

The results show that men are expected to be strong, handy, straight and emotionally cold, among other things. Men should follow the different norms for the reason that the environment should consider them as "real" men or males. When the various norms are not met, the men are met by informal sanctions in the form of exclusion and expulsion. In today's secularized society, there is a hope that men will be allowed to be themselves without further sanctions. The study shows the opposite, it rather shows that the destructive norms remain in today's secularized society. Keywords: hegemonic masculinity, norms, societal expectations, exclusion
