The Hero Figure’s Cultural Power : A study on the power of artistic and cultural expressions using the character of Medea (English)
Abstract [en]
The purpose of this study is to explore the character of Medea in order to analyse the herofigure and its societal influence via artistic and cultural expressions. A narrative analysis is applied on the work of Euripides’ play Medea (431 BC) as well as British dramaturg Ben Power’s new version of the aforementioned play, in National Threate Live: Medea (2014). Joseph Campbell’s model of the Hero’s Journey (monomyth) is applied on the character of Medea, alongside Maureen Murdock’s model of the Heroine’s Journey, to examine her journey as a hero. R. W. Connell’s gender studies theory on hegemonic masculinity is utilized in order to apply a gender perspective on Medea as a hero-figure. The outcome of this study reveals that the two versions of the character Medea demonstrates that she was modelled after the male hero-figure, and rejected both the journey of the heroine, as well as her identity as a woman, in order to succeed with her goals. This shows that Medea becomes a hero by adopting masculine ideals, which communicates a view that in order to be a hero, a woman must abandon her femininity. This view, combined with the examined power of artistic and cultural expression, showcases that these expressions may influence societal views on the hero-figure as something inherently masculine.
