Abstract
That countries act differently in the international system is due to many variables. States often strives to strengthen their security by engaging in intergovernmental cooperation that seems to follow their own country’s national identity. The purpose of the study has been, based on Kingdon’s multiple streams theory and its assumptions, to see if we can find an explanation for why Sweden changed its position regarding the convention’s total ban on nuclear weapons, also to see why Sweden decided not to sign the UN General Assembly’s convention. I have through a qualitative content analysis, process tracing and multiple streams theory identified possible research factors. The study’s conclusion shows that variables such as individual, historical aspects, timing and the elections have had a great importance in the outcome.
