Abstract [en]

This essay is an ethnological observational study of tombstone ornaments from the 1700`s topresent time. The purpose of this study is to examine if tombstone ornaments are different overtime, and if so how it will appear and if changes in society can be connected to the attributes ofthe ornaments.It will be examined through three research questions:• Are there any specific ornament attributes for each time period?o How does it appear?o Can changes in society be connected with these ornament attributes?The metod of choice for this study have been ethnological observation of materiality anddocumentation of the ornaments. In total eight churchyards have been investigated anddocumented. The collected data have later ben processed and divided in to tables and charts, toanswer the resarch questions.The theory behind this essay is that changes in society can be examined through materiality.The societal change used to illustrate this is the process of religious secularization since theearly 1900`s to present time. All research questions have been answered and are included in afinal discussion where further research suggestions are recommended. The result for this studyproves that there are specific ornament for each time period, they appear differently over timeand change in society can be connected to the ornaments attributes.
