: A comparative analysis of the first hard-boiled male detective and the contemporary female detective (English)
Abstract [en]
This work is a character study of Raymond Chandler's classic hard-boiled detective from the 1950s, Philip Marlowe and Åsa Larsson's female detective from the 2020s, the prosecutor Rebecka Martinsson. The purpose is to investigate whether the modern female detective differs from the traditional male detective and how the female detective is presented in comparison with the male model in the detective genre. Another issue that is raised is how the female detective is portrayed from a gender perspective. This is done based on theories by Lois Tyson, Cora Kaplan, Kerstin Bergman and Sara Kärrholm. The focus of the analysis is on the characters' personalities according to the theories the literature addresses on the subject. Despite the large age difference between the two works, there are similarities between the characters. In summary, Marlowe is the hard-boiled detective and Martinsson is a woman of her time. A woman who has to deal with society's views on norms, careers and mental illness.
