The construction industry (CI) has continued to follow traditional project management (TPM) for a half-century, despite significant problems in the industry and the emergence of increasingly complex construction projects. 

The purpose of this study was to examine construction project managers' views on adopting agile project management (APM) in CI and to investigate whether CI can benefit from adopting APM in the execution phase of a construction project.

The study used a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews. Nine interviews were conducted with construction project managers on diverse types of projects in CI. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the collected data, which resulted in four themes: 1 – We need change 2 – We do not like change 3- It is not unusual for a construction project to be behind schedule 4 – We need to speak the same language.

The results demonstrated that the construction project managers were aware of the insufficiency of TPM. They had, on the other hand, an optimistic view of the flexibility of APM and expected a lot of benefits from it. According to the results of this study, the expected benefits from integrating APM into current management methods in CI are more flexibility, increased adaptability, better productivity, more effective communication, and better cooperation. 

Finally, this study recommends the adoption of an agile mindset in CI along with the application of several agile principles and tools. Thus, this study contributes to the encouragement of APM adoption in CI and the development of construction project management towards more flexibility.

Byggbranschen har fortsätt att använda traditionell projektledning under de senaste fem decennierna, trots betydande problem i branschen och uppkomsten av alltmer komplexa byggprojekt.

Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka byggprojektledares syn på att införa agil projektledning i genomförandefasen av byggprojekt. Studien undersöker också om byggbranschen skulle dra nytta av det införandet.

Studien använde sig av en kvalitativ metod, med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Nio intervjuer genomfördes med projektledare i olika typer av byggbranschen. Tematisk analys användes för att analysera den insamlade data, vilket resulterade i fyra teman: Första temat:  Vi behöver förändring. Andra temat: Vi tycker inte om förändring. Tredje temat: Det är inte ovanligt att ett byggprojekt ligger efter tidplanen. Fjärde temat: Vi behöver tala samma språk.

Resultaten visade att byggprojektledarna var medvetna om bristen med traditionell projektledning. De hade, å andra sidan, en optimistisk syn på flexibiliteten av APM och förväntade sig mycket nytta av den. Enligt resultaten av denna studie, är de förväntade förmåner av att integrera agil projektledning i nuvarande projektledning i byggbranschen: mer flexibilitet, bättre anpassning till förändring, ökad produktivitet, mer effektiv kommunikation och bättre samarbete. 

Slutligen rekommenderar studien införandet av det agila tänkesättet och tillämpningen av några agila principer och verktyg i byggbranschen. Således har studien bidragit till uppmuntran av införandet av agil projektledning i byggbranschen och till byggprojektledningens utveckling mot mer flexibilitet.
