The aim for this study is to examine the rhetorical ability of two speakers, one male and one female. The two speakers are party leaders of two different parties in Sweden. The two examined speakers are Stefan Löfven from Socialdemokraterna, and Annie Lööf from Centerpartiet. The study works towards the hypothesis that Lööf is more rhetorically skilled and more effective in her speech since she is a female and the fact that her party is in opposition position in the Swedish government. The material in this study consists of Löfven and Lööfs speeches in the yearly political event Almedalen from the year 2018. Both speeches are analyzed in their written form only. This study is preformed through a hermeneutic analysis. By using the model of rhetorical analysis by Karlberg and Mral (1998), the twospeeches have been close read and later analyzed. The analysis shows that Lööf is a more skilled speaker than Löfven and that her speech is more effective than his. The conclusion from the analysis is that Lööf’s speech is more effective because she is a woman and therefore must be so. The analysis also shows that Löfven takes more risks in this speech and that he speaks more freely, which also depends on the fact that he is a male. The hypothesis presented in the beginning of this text is therefore confirmed.
