From drug experience to change : A qualitative study of therapists' experiences of treating clients with challenging drug experiences (English)
Abstract [en]

In society today there is a growing interest in drugs. An experience under the influence of drugs can sometimes be shocking and challenging. Even going as far as being one of the most demanding experiences during one's lifetime. However, it is believed that even a challenging drug experience has the potential to affect a person in a positive way, if handled in the right way. There is limited knowledge on how a therapist could work with these clients. The aim of this study is to examine therapists’ experiences of treating clients with challenging drug experiences. Semi structured interviews were conducted with five experienced therapists. The material was then analysed through a thematic analysis. The result consists of six themes: Facing the challenging; Giving the client space; From insight to change; No unified method; Capacity of understanding, and Private healthcare as the only option. The client's drug experiences were used actively as a component in the therapeutic work. The therapists actively used certain tools and competencies in the integration work of the drug experiences, although there was no unified method. The result mostly reflects the scientific research in the field, though the research is lacking. Further studies are needed to evaluate methods and workways.
