A Figurative Declaration of Love? : Interpretations of two Murals by Tove Jansson from a Queer Perspective (English)
Abstract [en]
This study focuses on the two murals, Fest i stan (Party in the City) and Fest på landet (Party in the Countryside) from 1947, by the Finnish artist and author Tove Jansson. Jansson described herself as bisexual and lived in same-sex relationships. Her life and artistic expression were closely linked. The study seeks to explore if there are queer perspectives in Fest i stan (Party in the City) and Fest på landet (Party in the Countryside) through a historiographical and semiotic analysis. Furthermore, a comparison is made between queer expressions in the two works of art. The results show that the artist used her own life story as a background for the artwork's production and that the artworks contain queer perspectives.
